LANDSCAPE

LANDSCAPE

This 'Landscape' is a close up photograph (a side angle view) of 'The Roach' installation (2007). It is simultaneously ugly as it is beautiful, familiar yet dangerous. 'Roaches and Flowers: War in The Home' is an exploration of beautification as a means to hide/masks something more sinister.

VENUS TRAP

VENUS TRAP

With subtle reference to the Venus Fly Trap flowers and Venus as the planet that represents the female sex, this image is part of 'Roaches and Flowers: War In The Home.' The home is represented as a hostile place where the psychological state of the female subject is in transition as is her identity. With undertones of abuse, familiar objects become a threat, they are like roaches and insects - unwelcome in this familiar space. Flowers often follow apologies and in a hostile environment where danger is recurrent, they can threaten rather than comfort.

CONVERSATION PIECE (DETAIL)

CONVERSATION PIECE (DETAIL)

'Conversation Piece' was a plate covered completely in text from a second hand book entitled 'Savage Conquest.' This photograph shows a detail including the fork and knife laden with nails. THE BURIAL

THE BURIAL

'The Burial' was a video installation. The video was projected from above. The rectangular outline is the 'hole' in the wooden floor and the video projected onto the actual surface beneath the constructed house - projecting on grass, dirt and stones. A commentary on domestic violence in Trinidad and Tobago, this was part of LA FANTASIE - a project with Marlon Griffith and Nikolai Noel. The projections (the other was BRUISE) were my part of the installation. In the video there is dirt and audio of faint breathing. Slowly the dirt is shoveled away by an invisible force. Eventually it reveals a woman's body buried beneath the surface.

THE RACE

THE RACE

'The Race' is an image from 'Roaches and Flowers: War In The Home.' These insects are made from domestic items stereotypically associated with women - kitchen utensils. The spoon (serving utensil) and the fork (used here as a forceful/defensive weapon) are in a race as the female subject situation in this hostile home environment struggles to strategize in this 'war.' To serve and be subservient or to defend and retaliate?
